The Bavarian Garden and Flower Show 2012 in Bamberg

Culture and Nature at their best

The Bavarian Garden and Flower Show is staged in the world heritage city of Bamberg from April 26th to October 7th, 2012 , creating a huge new recreational park for Bamberg. On the northern tip of the island district of Bamberg, where the two arms of the River Regnitz meet again after having flowed round the medieval old town of Bamberg , visitors can enjoy a garden party lasting the whole summer 2012 with colourful blossoms, plants of all sizes and kinds and great open-air events. Once the site of a textile manufactory, a huge area has been turned into a park. The floral planners have taken the theme of textiles to heart and there are many allusions to textile fabrics on the grounds and in the assembly of the plants and paths.

One of the main sights is the Fish Pass, the ecological top project. For about a mile the fish creek winds its picturesque way through the grounds. Not only does it look wonderful, it also allows the local fish population to navigate the Regnitz river upstream again, after nearly a hundred years of a dead end at the lock of the textile manufactory. A patchwork garden, the pyramid meadows, a vast number of flower beds and perennials and lots of garden pavilions and information on gardening and plants are accompanied by more than 2.000 cultural events during the 165 days of the show. All that amounts to an incredibly attractive add-on for Bamberg visitors, just a few minutes from the old town away.

The garden show also finds its way into the city, thanks to the city-projects, like the new vineyard on the slopes of Michelsberg hill, underneath St. Michael’s Monastery or the modern relaunch of the Gardener’s museum in the Gardener’s district of Bamberg and the new circular route taking visitors to the most important points of the district, explaining the history of gardening and wine growing in Bamberg.

Should we mention, that there’ll also be the Millennium Celebration of Bamberg’s Cathedral, featuring a large historical exhibition in the Museum of the Diocese from May 6th to October 31st, 2012 and various other cultural events on Cathedral Square and in the Cathedral?
