Christmas market in Oberammergau
Oberammergau - a lovely village that is home to the world-famous Passion Play and a long tradition of wood carving.
Tradition and customs are inseparably connected with Oberammergau in the romantic alpine region of the Ammergau Alps, which took center stage this year when the world-famous, decennial Passion Play was performed during the summer months.
Always on the first Sunday of Advent, this charitable market takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a heart at the church square. After the mass the Oberammergau brass musicians traditionally open the market outside the church.
On the lovingly decorated stands a variety of treats and handmade Christmas decorations, home-grown candles, decorative Christmas gifts and more are offered. Main attraction for lots of native citizen is the raffle while younger visitors love the ancient carousel and wait for the visit of Santa Claus.
The traditional carol singing in the parish church of St. Peter and Paul at 7:30 p.m. completes the festive conclusion of this afternoon.
Christmas Handicraft Market –Nativity Scenes in a Nutshell
In 2016, the Christmas Handicraft Market takes place on December 10 to 11 in the event hall Ammergauer Haus in Oberammergau. You will find there lovely arts and handicrafts like homemade jams, hand-knitted socks and hand carved nativity scenes so small that they fit in a nutshell.
The Christmas Market opening times are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Admission is free!
Winter is a wonderful time for delighting in culture in this region. The nearby Linderhof Palace, one of King Ludwig II's marvelous masterpieces, is regarded as even more beautiful in the winter than in other seasons. The crib (Christmas nativity scene) exhibit in the Oberammergau Museum is truly exceptional – particularly its show-piece, the historic church nativity scene from three centuries ago, which is an absolute must-see for visitors.
