Discover Bavaria’s Religious Centers Altötting and Oberammergau
The Marian pilgrimage town of Altötting and the Passion Play village of Oberammergau are the best known religious centers in Bavaria. For this reason, these two stunning destinations have cooperated together for many years. However, starting in 2011, these two towns will begin to offer a five-day program that includes many of the cultural and religious highlights in the region. In Altoetting, visit Germany’s most important shrine of the "Black Madonna", the new treasury and the Jerusalem Panorama.
In Oberammergau, get a behind the scenes tour of the Passion Play theater and learn about why this decennial play has become a world-famous event and one of Europe’s finest traditions. While in the area, visit the fairy tale castles of King Ludwig II (Neuschwanstein and Linderhof) or the awesome UNESCO World Heritage, rococo-style "Wieskirche" - the Pilgrimage Church of the Scourged Savior.
