Frundsberg Festival Mindelheim 2012 - A town reliving its medieval past

The Frundsberg Festival (from 28th June to 8th July 2012) - every three years the people of Mindelheim commemorate a great family of knights from Schwaz in Tyrol, who took over the town and dominion of Mindelheim in 1467 and determined the destinies of this region in the very heart of Swabia for more than 100 years.

The Frundsberg Festival - this means above all the commemoration of the "Father of the mercenaries", the general of the emperors Maximilian I and Charles V, who was born in the castle above Mindelheim in 1473 and who died there on 20th August 1528: Georg von Frundsberg.

The people of Mindelheim celebrated their first Frundsberg Festival in the early autumn of 1853. Mindelheim's children and young people have always been involved, thereby having an early opportunity to learn something about the history of their home region. The "Frundsberg Festring", the organization managing the festival, has continued this old tradition and - together with the members of existing historical groups and with the assistance of all interested local clubs and associations - has succeeded in making the Frundsberg Festival a major historical event.

This festival is celebrated in the very heart of the town, between its gates and towers, surrounded by the town walls. There are historical parades with more than 2000 participants, festive concerts in churches and chapels, a Renaissance jamboree in the Holy Cross Monastery, a re-enactment of medieval camp life, and general merry-making in the town. Also to be seen are a historical peasants' market, a whole row of medieval shops, medieval craftsmen at work, and performances of theatre dramas of the period.
