Abbeys and monasteries
The state's famed churches and other sacred buildings are still today important places of pilgrimage and witnesses to the deeply held faith of the people of Bavaria. Many of the monasteries in Bavaria were closed down during the secularisation of 1802/1803. From 1817 permission was once again given for new monasteries to be founded.
Today Bavaria‘s monasteries have become important and attractive tourist landmarks. Most of them are well preserved, still inhabited by their religious order and living witness to the state’s rich past. Below is a list of the most important, most beautiful and most breathtaking monasteries in Bavaria.

Benedictine Abbey of Niederaltaich »
After the Bavarian Duke Odilo of the Agilofinger family founded the monastery, Charlemagne took over Niederaltaich as an Empirical Monastery in 788.
