Perpetual adoration and procession of light in Franconian Switzerland
Perpetual adoration and procession of light in Gößweinstein on 26th December 2016
A very special highlight in the Christmas calendar is the celebration of adoration and procession of light in Gößweinstein on 26th December each year.
In the evening the streets are alight with the light from a large bonfire and fireworks. Come and watch this ancient religious custom in Franconian Switzerland or better, still, join in the procession yourself.
This custom that was very popular back in the 18th century was revived back in 2005 in Gößweinstein and now annually draws large numbers of people to the town each year.

Perpetual adoration, celebratory procession and bonfire in Pottenstein/Franconian Switzerland on 6th January 2017
Every year on 6th January the parish of Pottenstein celebrates the festival of perpetual adoration. Thousands of people flock from near and far to see the magic created by 1,000 or so fires all around the town of Pottenstein. As darkness falls and the final prayer draws to a close at about 5 p.m. the congregation begins to process slowly through the town. As they wend their way through the street lights begin to glitter all around the perimeter of the town as bonfires are lit on rocky outcrops high above the town.
This custom of lighting mountain beacons to honour God can, with some historical accuracy, be dated back to 1905. It was then that this festival to mark Epiphany and the eve of Epiphany (5th and 6th January) was established as a celebration of perpetual adoration in Pottenstein. The celebration of perpetual adoration itself can be traced right back to 1759.
