Handwerkerhof (Craftmen’s Yard) am Königstor, Nuremberg
Located on the site of Nuremberg’s erstwhile armoury this cultural oasis which was established in the Dürer celebratory year of 1971 has delighted millions of visitors from all over the world. Master violin makers and plucked instrument makers in Mittenwald
The craft of making violins, violas, celli, double basses, historic stringed instruments and plucked instruments in Mittenwald can look back on centuries of tradition. In the true sense of the saying, in Mittenwald the sky is full of fiddles as the windowsills and balconies and the sun terrace of the violin making school are full of violins hanging up to dry and to darken in colour. The deep affection for the so-called “Mittenwalderinnen“ – a violin made in Mittenwald dates way back to the 18th century. The violins’ great reputation is all down to the Mittenwald violinmaker Matthias Klotz (1653 – 1743) who brought the art and inspiration of violin making back to his hometown on his return from Italy. Mittenwald today is still home to numerous violin and plucked instrument master craftsmen.

Wood carving in Oberammergau
Today there are some 60 wood carvers in Oberammergau who earn their living by carving anything and everything from utensils through to statues of saints. The wood carving industry in Oberam mergau can be traced right back to the Middle Ages. The earliest recorded mention is a report from 1111 describing how monks from Rottenbuch in the Ammergau brought to the Berchtesgadener Land the art of carving all kinds of household items out of wood. It is presumed that the tradition of carving religious figures dates back to the first pilgrimages to Ettal.
