Christmas market in Coburg

During the Christmas season, Coburg in the south of Germany develops a unique magic: The booths and stalls in the heart of the historic Old Town are open from December 1- 23, 2017 from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. all days.

The market place transforms itself into a little city of Christmas boutiques, all contained between the historic city hall and the old ducal chancellery. The Coburg Christmas market is among the most atmospheric in Franconia. That’s not only because of the picturesque setting and the beautiful lighting design, but also because of the many special accompanying activities. In addition to the classic store booths—where, by the way, exclusively Christmas products from the Coburg region are offered—many artisans from the region are also in attendance. Visitors can watch basket weavers, art glass blowers, porcelain painters and wood carvers—in a living workshop. The finished products are then sold, immediately after their completion, in their own little Christmas boutiques. Those who think that they’ve "been here, done that" haven't seen everything yet! The performances and programs that are part of the Christmas market change every year. For children, the Deutsche Spielzeugstraße (German Toy Road) offers a lot of surprises. And if you'd like to "mingle" with the locals, the quickest way is by having a cup of Glühwein (mulled wine) beneath the starry skies—and next to the statue of Prince Albert! The British have Albert—perhaps the most famous of all "Coburgers"—to thank for introducing the Christmas tree to England. Every year on Christmas Eve, Prince Albert was adamant about maintaining the traditions that he had learned as a child in the fortress city. Visitors to the Christmas market can also experience a ride in a historical carriage—with real horsepower!—through the inner city.

Those who love Christmas markets should also plan a walk through the lovingly designed markets of Bad Rodach and Neustadt bei Coburg. In addition, a visit to the Historische Weihnachtsmuseum (Historic Christmas Museum) in Neustadt will heighten the anticipation for the grand celebration that is Christmas.
