The marvelous 18th-century Margravial Opera House, built by Italian architect Giuseppe Galli Bibiena, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has been called a “masterpiece of Baroque theatre architecture.” In the heart of the city, the New Palace, by French master builder Joseph Saint-Pierre, is considered to be an outstanding work of art. The beautiful gardens of Fantaisie Palace and the Hermitage draw visitors from all over the world. There is also the Old Palace, featuring grottos, water features and the fairytale Orangery. At its center, the Temple of the Sun is crowned with a statue of Apollo, the god of muses. Princess Wilhelmine, who created all this, once walked the boards of the Roman Theatre in the Hermitage side by side with the great philosopher Voltaire, who is reported to have said: “Once poets and artists went on to Naples, Florence or Ferrara. Today they come to Bayreuth!” Margrave Friedrich founded one of Europe’s first Masonic lodges here in Bayreuth, and 100 years later the city became Richard Wagner’s home and center of inspiration. Bayreuth also offers a great variety of regional dishes and over 1,000 delicious local beers, brewed at more than 200 craft breweries in the region. The Maisel Brewery and Cooperage Museum is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most extensive beer museum in the world. House Wahnfried and the new Richard Wagner Museum will open their doors to the public in July 2015.
