Kelheim – a town on the river

Celts, kings, shrines

Kelheim is a town that breathes history and stories. Go on a voyage of discovery in Kelheim and encounter the world of the Celts, dukes and kings who loved building, the great sons and rebellious citizens and rebellious citizens of the town. High above Kelheim towers its emblem, the Hall of Liberation, which Ludwig I of Bavaria had built. The domed structure based on a classical model was built in memory of the battles of the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon (1813 to 1815) and as a monument to German unity. The impressive monument can be discovered all year round: with the blue and white Ludwigsbahn, a little tourist train, visitors not only get up the mountain easily, but also find out a lot of interesting information en route.

All aboard in the "town on the river" –Danube gorge and Main-Danube Canal

The most attractive sides of Kelheim are best discovered from the water, for example on board an excursion boat of the Kelheim "White Fleet": the Weltenburger Strait near Kelheim is a unique natural spectacle. The almost perpendicular limestone rocks, between which the Danube winds its way, rise up to almost 70 metres high. On a journey on the Main-Danube Canal, wonderful destinations are revealed, past castles and palaces of the Altmühltal.

Enjoying beer in Kelheim: visiting the Weltenburg Abbey brewery and Weisses Bräuhaus

If there is a place that can pride itself on a rich tradition in the art of brewing, it is Kelheim: The town is home to the oldest existing wheat beer brewery in Bavaria , and the oldest abbey brewery in the world can be found in Weltenburg Abbey in a picturesque location on the banks of the Danube. A delicious tradition that the people of Kelheim uphold with pride. Guests can discover the diversity of the liquid specialities in a relaxed environment: in cosy pubs and beer gardens. In guided tours of the brewery, you can trace the past and present of beer production with all your senses.

Exciting trips in a unique natural landscape.

Cycling and hiking routes around Kelheim / e-bike stations

Anyone who wants to do something a bit more sporty can discover the unique landscape, which impresses visitors with its unmistakeable charm, on foot or by bicycle on regional circular routes or popular long-distance routes, such as the Altmühltal Cycle Route (230 kilometres) or the Altmühltal Panoramic Route (200 kilometres), which start and end in Kelheim.

The unique natural landscape of the Weltenburg Strait is best explored on foot on one of the many local walking trails in this area: The Danube-Altmühl Circular Route, the Archaeological Walking Trail, the Hopfenbach Valley Circular Route or the Michelsberg Circular Route – walkers have the choice. On the way, they will keep discovering relics from pre- and early history, for example the partially reconstructed Celtic "Oppidum Alkimoennis".

As a member of the e-bike region of the Altmühl Valley Nature Park and its neighbouring areas, Kelheim offers a service network for pedelecs, commonly called e-bikes: this includes hire stations, as well as battery charging and replacement stations, and routes that are particularly suitable for trips with an electric bicycle.
