"Hopfen und Malz, Gott erhalt's!" is a popular phrase that translates loosely as “Hops and Malt, God’s gifts!”. It reflects the huge significance of hops in Bavarian culture. In the town of Wolnzach, in Upper Bavaria, in the midst of the largest hop growing region in the world – the Hallertau – a whole museum is dedicated to this special crop.
The German Hop Museum teaches visitors everything there is to know about growing and processing hops. In the modern building, designed to resemble a hop garden, an exhibition space covering over 1,000 square metres gives visitors a fascinating insight into the history of hops as an agricultural crop, its harvest and the hop trade. And naturally it covers the topic of beer too. For example, beer lovers can take part in their own beer tasting seminars.
