Bavaria would not be the Bavaria that we know if it were not for Bogen – for is where the Bavarian lozenges originate. Thus, their story, from its beginnings with the counts of Windberg-Bogen to their use by the House of Wittelsbach and in the Bavarian state coat of arms to becoming the symbol of Bavaria, is plainly a main theme of the supra-regional museum of the Straubing-Bogen district.
A second focus here in the former parish barn at the pilgrimage church is the Bogenberg as the Holy Mountain of Lower Bavaria and the location of one of the oldest Bavarian sites dedicated to the Virgin Mary: The unusual miraculous image of a pregnant Madonna, the religious and excursion landscape of the Bogenberg, the Holzkirchen Pentecostal pilgrimage with the “long pole”, trade, commerce and religious art give a comprehensive impression of centuries of popular piety.
