The Pinakothek der Moderne, which opened in 2002, is one of the greatest museums of 20th and 21st century art in the world. It has an exhibition space of more than 12 000 m², comparable to the Centre Pompidou in Paris or the Tate Modern in London. The building by the architect Stephan Braunfels is characterised by an open and generous architecture, which allows ever new contexts and insights.
The Pinakothek der Moderne unites four institutions under one roof: The Modern Art Collection of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, the New Collection, the State Museum of Applied Art and Design, the Architecture Museum of the Technical University Munich and the State Graphic Art Collection. The interdisciplinary approach of the Pinakothek der Moderne maintains the identity of the individual collections, while presenting them as interconnected elements within a greater cultural context.
