Dates 2021: 7th - 16th MayThe International Puppet Theatre Festival is held every two years (in uneven years) in the towns of Erlangen, Nuremberg, Fürth and Schwabach.
In approximately 100 shows over a ten day period at 20 different venues, more than 50 theatre groups from all over the world present what we understand today to be contemporary puppet theatre: Puppet theatre, object and image theatre, the border areas to dance, performance and circus but also the use of new media – video projections and interactive technologies – all of this is presented on stage.
Like hardly any other form of theatre, puppet theatre has developed beyond its limits, absorbed stimuli from other areas of theatre, tried out new stylistic idioms and been curious on an interdisciplinary level. The International Puppet Theatre Festival held in Erlangen, Nuremberg, Fürth and Schwabach is one of the most important meeting points for these cross-over theatre experiments. Established in 1979 in Erlangen, today it is one of the most significant festivals for interdisciplinary puppet, image and object theatre worldwide and with more than 20,000 visitors one of the most popular festivals with audiences.
In the fringe programme: street theatre, exhibitions, films, workshops, talks and discussions about productions. In cooperation with the Institute for Theatre and Media Studies of the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, the “Junge Forum Intermedial” (Young Intermedial Forum) offers students and young theatre artists a platform for presenting their work and for getting to grips with the genre of puppet theatre.
