The routeSchloss Leitheim to Castle Dennenlohe
Located between Dinkelsbühl and Gunzenhausen, you reach Castle Dennenlohe after around 60 kilometres. The 26-hectare nature park hosts a breathtaking display of botanical specimens, and it is also famous for being the largest rhododendron park in the south of Germany. Enthusiastic gardeners and visitors can also enjoy a guided tour of the magical gardens, which is personally led by the “green-fingered Baron” – Robert Freiherr von Süsskind – upon request.
Schloss Leitheim - Eichstätt
The 50-km route to Eichstätt takes you past buildings and city walls that are steeped in history, as well as numerous restaurants. Ideal for art and culture lovers. The original charm as well as the historical architecture take you back to different epochs – from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance and Baroque into the 19th century. Merging together into the present and future and also into their natural surroundings, they place their own individual stamp on the multifaceted city image. Schloss Leitheim – Neuburg an der Donau
Your journey from Schloss Leitheim in the direction of Neuburg an der Donau (approx. 30 kilometres) is punctuated by a stunning view of the magnificent castle facade with its two eye-catching turrets. The former Residence town lies in the delightful surroundings of the picturesque Danube valley, on the border between the Franconian Jura in the north and the hills of the Donaumoos conservation area in the south. Friendly and inviting alleyways and squares in the old town as well as the Residence Palace, the impressive patrician houses of the aristocracy and the Staatsgalerie, emphasise the charm of this small town. Surrounded by these cultural treasures, you can follow in the footsteps of the Renaissance at the Neuburger Schlossfest and experience the world of the aristocracy at first hand.
Schloss Leitheim - Aichach
The final tour takes you 50 km further to the Swabian town of Aichach, with a picturesque old town dating back to the Middle Ages. Take this opportunity to find out more about the Wittelsbach family, whose roots are firmly embedded in this area. The Church of the Virgin Mary, the traces and relics that can still be seen today as well as the national monument and the memorial stone, are still a resounding testament to Burg Wittelsbach, which was the magnificent home of the House of Wittelsbach and from which it gets its name. Only a few steps further on, Unterwittelsbach is the site of a former moated castle, also known as “Sisi-Schloss” (Sisi’s Castle), based on Empress Elisabeth of Austria’s pet name of Sisi. Take your time and let the past lives of this family dynasty work their magic as you meander along these two exhilarating walks.
