Date 2019: not announced yetA wonderful custom can be experienced in the Upper Bavarian town of Schliersee in early August each year: The Alt-Schliersee Kirchtag.
The festivities begin in the morning, when members of the Alt-Schliersee local costume group travel in their lovingly decorated, traditional “Plätten” (wooden boats) from Fischhausen to Schliersee, as their forefathers used to do to attend the parish fair of the church of St. Sixtus. It is not just the boats that attract visitors with their floral decorations, but also the historic costumes worn for this event.
Members of other traditional costume societies wait for them on the shore and greet them with music, gunshots and bell ringing. They then attend a service in the church, which is followed by a large procession through the town of Schliersee. The Alt-Schliersee Kirchtag ends in the Bauerntheater, where there is dancing and music.
