Date 2019: 11th to 23th SeptemberEvery year in the autumn, the Altstadtfest, a festival held in Nuremberg's historic core, the Altstadt, provides visitors with much fun and entertainment. The tiny timber framed houses on Hans Sachs Platz and the Insel Schütt serve regional and international specialities, but also Federweißer (grape must in the very first stages of alcoholic fermentation), wine and a wide variety of regional beers.
The large parade on the first Saturday of this Volksfest is a must. Over 35 participants, drays, folk dance groups wearing traditional costumes, groups of samba dancers and many bands will be parading from Jakobsplatz to Hans-Sachs-Platz. Immediately after the festive parade, it's time for the traditional water jousting on the Pegnitz river. Regional teams from all over Germany compete against each other in rowing boats in team or singles competitions.
A fun fair by the Gewerbemuseumsplatz and other fairground attractions dotted around the centre of town also provide plenty of additional variety for young and old. The traditional autumn market ('Häferlesmarkt') is held on the Hauptmarkt, the main market square, at the same time as the Altstadtfest. Besides a wide range of household goods for sale, the market also features an interesting programme of events.
