Dates 2020: 24th to 27th JulyWhen the Kirchweih mayor takes over control of the town of Oettingen. The Jakobi-Kirchweih Fair was originally a church festival to celebrate the consecration of St. James' Church in 1494. Over the course of time, secular celebrations in inns soon crept into it. The people of Oettingen now celebrate a traditional folk festival for the whole family, in which the Kirchweih mayor takes control in the town and invites people to enjoy a varied programme.
Traditionally, inhabitants, associations and guests are invited to the opening of the Kirchweih Fair on the Friday with music and dancing in the market square, before they all go to the fairground by the river Wörnitz in a parade. After the tapping of the beer and the gun salute, the celebrations go on for four days. From traditional to rock – every evening, a different orchestra or party band creates the mood in the marquee!
“Oettingen's Got Talent” is the slogan at the well-known water festival on the Saturday. When darkness falls, all the guests from near and far gather on the bank of the illuminated Wörnitz and await the floating boat parade which is colourfully decorated and creatively designed by Oettingen associations and groups. The brilliant, unparalleled baroque firework display shimmers wonderfully on the surface of the water at the end of the parade.
It's time for action on Sunday: as well as the traditional bustle of the Kirchweih Fair, groups from Oettingen and the surrounding area are competing at Wörnitz water jousting for the first time. The main thing is the fun factor; after all, each team also has a “dirndl joker”! The Oettingen wind band provides lively evening entertainment in the marquee.
The Monday of the Kirchweih Fair focuses on children and families. It is not only the merry-go-round, bumper cars etc. that attract visitors with reduced prices. In the afternoon, the spectators eagerly watch to see which child will win the first prize in the traditional “Hammeltanz” dance! At 7:30 pm, the Oettingen traditional dress shop gets you “excited about traditional dress” with sexy models in smart traditional dress demonstrating the latest fashion in traditional dress on the runway in the marquee, before the fair ends with the traditional rock party band Apolonia.
