Bavaria's oldest short film festival provides one week of pure cinema every year in the cultural world heritage town Bamberg. At Bamberg Short Film Festival, more than 70 filmmakers from Germany and abroad vie for a literally “sweet” film award: the chocolate “Bamberg Horseman”. They present recent and extraordinary feature films, documentary films, animations, experimental films and children's films.
Small cinemas and short distances provide an informal atmosphere on the “Bamberg film mile”. Visitors appreciate the personal contact with the directors above all. Film talks and discussions give them a direct insight into the world of the filmmakers.
Bamberg Short Film Festival has often served as a springboard for great careers. Amongst others, Detlev Buck (“Jailbirds”), Tom Tykwer (“Perfume”, “Run Lola Run”), Peter Thorwarth (“If It Don't Fit, Use a Bigger Hammer”) and OSCAR winner Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck presented their first works here.
The international supporting programme provides a platform for renowned filmmakers and film institutions from throughout the world. Big names in the film industry such as Michael Ballhaus or Hans W. Geissendörfer support the festival, which is organised almost entirely on a voluntary basis, year after year as “artistic sponsors”.
