A must for all cinema fansThe latest films from throughout the world, stars, premières, and mild summer evenings – it doesn't take more than that to make film enthusiasts happy. Every year, Munich celebrates a film festival in its unique atmosphere.
Since it was established in 1983, more than 4,000 films have been shown. Guests have included stars such as Quentin Tarantino, Robert De Niro, John Malkovich, Salma Hayek, Leonardo DiCaprio, Geraldine Chaplin, Charlotte Rampling, Mario Adorf, Werner Herzog, Audrey Hepburn and Maximillian Schell.
There are around 200 films to be discovered in the festival cinemas. The largest summer film festival is attended each year by actors, directors, producers, authors, distributors, representatives of the press and around 70,000 cinema fans. It is one of the most successful festivals in Europe.
Munich cinema summerThere are non-stop premières on 18 film festival screens. In addition to the international series with big names and newcomers from throughout the world, German film is not neglected. In the section “New German Cinema”, new talents are presented alongside well-known directors. They compete for the “German Cinema New Talent Award” – as Ralf Westhoff (“Shoppen”), Johanna Wokalek (“Pope Joan”), Alexander Fehling (“Young Goethe in Love”) and Marcus H. Rosenmüller (“Grave Decisions”) did before them. In the section “German TV Films”, you can see the best TV films of the coming year on the cinema screen.
A festival of encountersThe special thing about FILMFEST MÜNCHEN: actors, well-known directors and promising young filmmakers not only present their films in the cinema, but also discuss them with film enthusiasts following the screenings and in the daily event series “Filmmakers Live”in the Gasteig. Here, you can ask the filmmakers whatever it is that you have always wanted to ask. And the best thing is: “Filmmakers Live” is public. Anyone has access, can be there and take part in the discussion. At FILMFEST MÜNCHEN, everyone who loves cinema is a VIP.
