The International Regensburg Short Film Week was established in 1994 by Arbeitskreis Film Regensburg e.V. and has taken place annually ever since. What began as a little experiment has now developed into a fixture in the cultural life of the city on the Danube and has taken up the role of a cultural beacon.
The primary concern of the festival is to bring the short film, which is practically non-existent in a conventional cinema programme and on the television, out of hiding and to provide it with an appropriate platform, a public presentation space – with and in the International Regensburg Short Film Week. This is, for example, also demonstrated by its membership of AG Kurzfilm, the German Short Film Association. The festival is a founding member of AG Kurzfilm. This association intends to improve the public perception of German short films overall. In this spirit, it acts – in Germany and abroad – as a contact for politics, the film industry, cinemas and festivals, and as a service centre for short film makers, producers and institutions.
The winners of the individual competitions are selected by the respective juries. Particularly worth a mention is the Jury of the Young, which has awarded the Prize of the City of Regensburg since the first SHORT FILM WEEK.
Alongside the competitions, there are various special programmes: amongst other things, the short film week deals with a specific theme each year which gives the visitor a little insight into the history of the short film.
Since the very beginning, the festival has included at least one showcase of the work of an internationally renowned director. This presents a selection of the director's work and provides an opportunity for film discussions between the public and the director.
It is not only the adults whose knowledge of short films is increased; children and teenagers also have a fixed place in the packed programme. Thus, right since the very beginning of the Regensburg SHORTFILM WEEK, it has included a children's programme.
A highlight and crowd puller of the REGENSBURG SHORT FILM WEEK is the “record films” introduced in 1999. This made a long-cherished idea a reality. Regensburg DJs add sound to silent films on site and thus enrich the lively DJ and musician scene in Regensburg. The interest in the “record films” category is continually increasing. In recent years, nationally and internationally renowned DJs have, therefore, also increasingly played music for the films.
In addition to the film programme, lively discussions, a good atmosphere and unique celebrations are an integral part of the festival. These are provided by the short film week café in the Leerer Beutel restaurant and the Kinokneipe pub right behind the Ostentor cinema, which becomes a festival club during this period. With a heated tent as an annex, there is enough space to give into the good atmosphere every evening in themed parties with DJs. Even if your eyes are tired, you will generally only find sleep after the relaxed “after cinema parties”.
Another highlight is the Zündfunk party, where you can meet friends and which is amongst the best parties in Bavaria, according to the Zündfunk DJs Achim Bogdahn and Roderich Fabian.
