Magical places of Frankenwein (Bavarian wine of Franconia)Unique landscapes and fine wines make a walking tour through this wine country an unforgettable experience. With more than 6,000 hectares of picturesque vine-covered hills, Franconia offers numerours wine walking routes. Each has its own particular appeal.
In Sommerhausen the wine walking trail leads through the Siegelswäldchen woods. High above the vineyards, it offers a breathtaking view across Sommerhausen, the wine hills along the River Main, Ochsenfurt, Eibelstadt and as far as Würzburg. In the wood itself there are life-size sculptures made of steel, wood, shell limestone and clay. They represent the different jobs of the winemakers
On the wine trail in Iphofen, in addition to the well-known Julius Echter estate you can also discover the international world of wine. Various columns explain how much wine individual countries produce. A lookout tower shows how far Franconia is from the other major wine-producing countries.
In the historic wine centre of Sommerach the winemakers invite you to stroll rather than hike through their wine region. At five exciting stations you can learn about the Sommeracher wine kingdom with its wine hills, schools and cellars, and taste the best wines from the southern section of the River Main. Alternatively, you can walk along well developed tracks through the vineyards of the Sommeracher Katzenkopf and the shell limestone cliffs as far as Nordheim, where many award-winning wines await – many bottled in a classic Bocksbeutel, naturally.
Wine walks in “terroir f” sitesSommerhausen, Volkach and Iphofen are three out of a total of ten so-called terroir f sites. As far back as the 16th century, French monks used the term “terroir” in relation to regional products such as cheese, meat and herbs. For wine, the term covers all the factors that give a wine its character: origin, soil, climate, location of the vineyard and the grape variety as well as the philosophy and working method of the winemaker. The lowercase f stands for Franconia.
Every single terroir f tells its own, highly personal story. In each case, the focus is on the region and the wine that is produced there. The places show the immense versatility of Franconia: during a wine walk through a terroir f area, fantastic views and picturesque scenery alternate with fascinating insights into the work of the winemaker. Wine shops and inns provide the perfect place to end the day.
