The crowning glory: Hochthronsteig climbing route
The via ferrata in the Berchtesgaden Region is for experienced rope partners: all those who master this difficult ascent earn the right to sit on the “throne”.
In the Berchtesgaden Region a number of striking peaks soar upwards, and many of them are surrounded by legend: the Watzmann, the Rotofen – which the locals call the “sleeping witch” due to its distinctive profile – or the Hochthron (High Throne), which nestles up to the mystical Untersberg. For centuries, people have recounted tales about goblins using the many caves in the Unterberg to hide their precious treasure. It is a place where time seems to stand still. You are unlikely to encounter any actual goblins on your climb in the Berchtesgaden Region, but you may well sense the special energy ascribed to this mountain. After reaching the top of the Hochthron and recovering in the Stöhrhaus, you will become aware of the vast resources of strength which have helped you to conquer this route. Moreover, you can stay overnight in the Stöhrhaus – just reserve your bed in advance!
