Pfrontener Mountain Bike Marathon
The Pfrontener MTB Marathon is one of Bavaria’s most attractive marathon routes. The tour is signposted all year round. Huts provide welcome breaks.
Germany’s most attractive MTB marathon: One of the most picturesque mountain bike marathons will be held in the town of Pfronten for the 15th time in summer 2018. Around 1000 bikers are expected to come and tackle the Breitenberg route. As in previous years, bikers can choose between 3 route options: the Extreme, Marathon and Short Tours. All three tours start from the centre of Pfronten. The mountain bikers then head towards Breitenberg. Even though the routes vary in difficulty, they all share a number of tough climbs alternating with rapid descents. After accomplishing such an exhausting feat, the ensuing party is naturally quite an event.
Retro rocks: A mega-jamboree and the annual highlight of the supporting programme around the Pfrontener MTB Marathon is the Folding Bike World Championship. On the craziest hill climb in the Alps, entrants can only ride original folding bikes from the 1970s or similar models – and that makes for a real challenge. With no gears to ease their ascent, they battle up the north face of Breitenberg Mountain. Those who fight their inner demons and make it to the top are rewarded with superb views and a “Gipfelhalbe” – a welcome pint of beer. The descent on the Breitenbergbahn mountain railway is far more relaxed.
Sporting challenge all through the year
The MTB Marathon is signposted all year round along its 51.7 km route. Given that it climbs 2,337 metres in total, it’s no walk in the park. However, the Hündeleskopfhütte, the Kappeler Alp, the Hochalphütte and the Berghaus Allgäu all offer plenty of opportunities for a refreshing break.
