The largest lake in Bavaria is the Chiemsee, which is otherwise known as the "Bavarian Sea". The name has a kernel of truth in it: not only does the lake, which has an area of 80 square kilometres, have tides like the sea, it also originated from the primeval Thetis Sea which once covered almost half of Europe.
It has three islands – Herreninsel, Fraueninsel and uninhabited Krautinsel – which all benefit from frequent ferry connections to the mainland. On Herreninsel King Ludwig built Schloss Herrenchiemsee, while Fraueninsel has an 8th century Benedictine convent with simple, inexpensive guestrooms and some of the best Bavarian restaurants, for instance the pretty Klosterwirt (www.klosterwirt-chiemsee.de).
Journey on the lake Chiemsee All-the-year line operation to the Islands from Prien am Chiemsee and Gstadt will be offered by Chiemsee Schifffahrt. Additional operations during the summer time from Seebruck, Chieming, Übersee/Feldwies and Bernau/Felden.
