Hops and malt, may God preserve them: discover the eastern Bavarian attitude to life
The hop poles tower up to seven metres into the sky of the Hallertau. They shape the unique landscape of the eastern Bavarian region with its gentle hills and little hamlets. The cultivation of hops in the heart of Bavaria has been documented since the eighth century. To this day, the Hallertau is the world’s largest coherent hop-growing area.
Take a hike through nature – combined with a visit to one of the many hop growers. They will pamper you with beer tastings and beer menus in rustic pubs – genuine Bavarian attitude to life included. In addition to malt, yeast and water, the flowers of the hop plant are one of the four main ingredients for beer brewing.
Medicinal plant hops: scientifically proven effect
But hops do not only have a beneficial effect as beer: spa experts from the Hallertau have rediscovered old home recipes and developed beneficial wellness treatments such as massages, baths and packs from them. The contents of the green umbel have a stimulating effect, promote your beauty and provide an inner balance.
“The efficacy of hops is scientifically proven,” confirms Margit Zettl-Feldmann of the Hotel Eisvogel in Bad Gögging. Under the slogan “Hopfenwell”, it offers a number of award-winning pampering treatments with the hop substance.
Experience the beneficial effect of hops in your whole body
Relax with a hop and honey cream pack or be massaged with hop oil made according to the hotel’s own recipe. The oil enhances the soothing, disinfecting and healing effect of the hop – especially in combination with warmth. Hop treatments in the spa and steam room alleviate skin irritations – for example if you are suffering from acne or rashes.
A hop and salt exfoliation frees your skin from dead skin cells. Then enjoy a foam massage with aromatic hop soap. Afterwards, a hop pistil oil massage provides deep relaxation.
An aromatic nightcap rounds off your hoppy wellness experience. This does not always have to be the classic beer: try a fine hop liqueur or a sparkling hop wine.
Hops make you beautiful and healthy
In folk medicine, the “green gold” of eastern Bavaria is traditionally used for:
- stress symptoms,
- muscle tension,
- migraines and
- joint pain.
Hops also contain phytohormones which resemble the female oestrogen. Thus, they help with menopausal symptoms. At the same time, the plant stimulates collagen production and has a skin-firming effect.
Hop cuisine: exquisite delicacies for gourmets
Hop connoisseurs long since discovered the versatile climbing plant – incidentally from the same plant family as cannabis – for cooking. In eastern Bavaria, it is on the menu all year round: whether it’s a fillet of beef in a hop crust or fresh soups and salads with flavoursome hop croutons.
A rare delicacy is “hop asparagus”. The root shoots of the hop cost up to 100 euros per kilo. There is a reason for the high price: Fewer and fewer hop growers offer this speciality which has to be laboriously harvested by hand in the spring.
In the autumn, the umbels of the green gold are delivered to the local breweries. Take a trip to the Roman fort Abusina in Eining near Bad Gögging or to the imposing Weltenburg Monastery by the Danube gorge. Here, you can round off the day with a tasty beer. Because pleasure is also wellness. Cheers!
