This view! The gently undulating hills and crests of Oberallgäu, covered by a white blanket of snow in the winter. The setting sun that bathes the sky in a dramatic red. It is moments such as these when you wish that time would simply stand still on the Hohenegg alp, regardless of whether you are dropping by or staying overnight.
A dream in woodNestled on the Imberg, in one of the most southerly corners of Oberallgäu, is the mountain guesthouse at 1,150 metres. “On the Hohenegg Alp, you still find a traditional lifestyle,” is how tenant, Carsten Schmahl, explains his hideaway.
The modern building complex was completely remodelled on a traditional Alp several years ago. The location and orientation of the “original Alp” were then adopted unchanged in order to retain the charm of a managed alp. The result is a place that has retained its Alpine character in combination with modern, angular wood design.
Guests appreciate this: “In the winter, a huge number of businesses come to us for meetings and celebrations,” explains Carsten Schmahl. “In addition, our multi-bed rooms are also very popular with small groups and families.” - The region has plenty of snow, the ski resort offers ideal opportunities for practice and also for downhill skiing for children and beginners.
Moments of happiness in the nature parkBut Hohenegg would not be Hohenegg without the opportunities for intoxicating moments of happiness away from the ski circus: “Behind the house you’ll find the start of a beautiful winter hiking trail. It is always well cleared and you can enjoy the winter landscape there,” says Carsten Schmahl.
“Ski-tourers who simply want to enjoy our beautiful landscape come to us time and again. They often stay overnight with us and then continue the next day to the Nagelfluh Mountains - for example to Hädrich or Falken.”
True Alpine cookingSince the beginning of 2015, Carsten Schmahl and his wife, Nikola, have managed the alp. Together they create a quality of event location, accommodation and gastronomy that is unsurpassed. “For me it makes sense that we work and cook with regional products. Were not interested in fancy presentation and place value on skill in the kitchen,” he says, illustrating the Hohenegg philosophy.
In the winter you really earn the delicious, hearty and sweet calories, because then the alp can only be reached on foot. Either by a short walk across from the Imberg chairlift or having hiked, in just over an hour, from the valley. On the way, you are rewarded time and again with wonderful views across Oberallgäu. There’s no doubt about it - this is probably the loveliest way to approach the best-kept Steibis secret.
