The snow-covered mountain ranges even seem to shield you from the frantic hustle and bustle. It’s as if time goes by a little more slowly here than elsewhere. The mountaineering villages in Upper Bavaria are places for cross-country skiing, winter hiking and skiing in peace and comfort.
The mountaineering villages in Upper Bavaria
The seal of mountaineering village was created in order to establish soft and sustainable tourism that goes hand in hand with people and nature. Only locations that fufil specific criteria can become a mountaineering village. For example, locations may have no more than 2,500 residents and a fifth of the municipal area must be a protected area. In addition, traditions and customs should be maintained and the village should have a particular Alpine charm. It was easy for the three villages in Upper Bavaria to fulfil these requirements.
Ramsau mountaineering village
The very first mountaineering village in Germany was Ramsau. And anyone who has been there knows why. Picturesque mountains, the most beautiful winter hiking trails, panoramic cross-country ski trails and also a hint of magic, which is particularly strong in the Zauberwald on Lake Hintersee. You will find a myriad of secret places and routes here. An impressive 300 kilometres of hiking and climbing trails wind their way through Ramsau. Many of these, such as the Upper Bavarian countryside theatre route, are also ideal for walking even in winter.
Schleching and Sachrang on Geigelstein
After Ramsau, the villages of Schleching and Sachrang were also awarded the sustainability rating. In Schleching, originality, tradition and completely unspoiled nature await to be explored on more than 12 winter hiking trails. At the foot of the 1,808-metre Geigelstein, the third Upper Bavarian mountaineering village of Sachrang can be found. As well as 15 kilometres of ski pistes, cross-country ski trails and numerous special walking tours, the authentic, traditional village setting with historic farmhouses, the Baroque church of St Michael and the Kaiser Mountains will also captivate you.
