Off to the Luise: Tobogganing in the Fichtel Mountains
In summer, the Fichtel Mountains offer ideal terrain for cyclists – then in winter you just exchange your bike for your toboggan and zoom down the slopes of the Low Mountains.
Tobogganing offers snow fun for all ages – and in many places in the Fichtel Mountains, one of several winter sports regions in the north of Franconia, you can rent your sledge or bob right on site.
Keen tobogganers should head for the slopes around the Kösseine, at 939 m the local mountain of the towns of Wunsiedel and Marktredwitz. Its silhouette is recognisable from afar: resembling a camel’s back, the twin peaks are a landmark in the Fichtel Mountains. On their north-east face between the Püttnerfelsen and the Luisenburg, the fabled rocky labyrinth of the Fichtel Mountains offers a beautifully groomed toboggan track. With a length of 1,500 m and an average gradient of 12 per cent, this is a very exciting descent on a toboggan. The ascent up the slope is also well designed so that tobogganers can make their way up and down without getting in each other’s way.
There is also good tobogganing fun to be had on the Ochsenkopf in the Fichtel Mountains, the second highest mountain in Franconia, for example in Grassemann, Fleckl, on the “Bleaml-Alm” in Fichtelberg, on the approx. 1,200 m long winter toboggan run in Hintergeiersberg near Warmensteinach or in Bischofsgrün, where the tobogganing slope on Lattalift is fully illuminated.
Bischofsgrün is a perfect destination for tobogganing for another reason: Here in winter it offers the new Alpine Coaster, a secure descent that runs over 1,000 m down into the valley. On the 700 m ascent up the mountain you can enjoy the views across the Fichtel Mountains before zooming back down into the valley on a modern sledge at speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour. Where necessary, weather hoods can make life even more comfortable for tobogganers on the Alpine Coaster. The ticket office and entrance to the new Coaster, open daily, is around 50 m above the north cable car valley station in Bischofsgrün.
