Winter walking through the snowy Allgäu
Explore the Allgäu on a beautiful winter walk through the snow-covered, fairy-tale countryside to the Sennalpe Mittelberg.
A winter’s walk through the Allgäu with a rest stop on the Alpe Mittelberg is always a real treat. The first written record of the rustic Sennalpe dates from 1585. Today it covers an area of 38 hectares and in the summer months is home to around 70 cows and young cattle each year. The tangy milk is used by the proprietor himself to make cheese, butter and yoghurt. On the Sennalpe, cheesemaking is still a real craft that requires plenty of experience to produce the tasty Allgäu cheese. Pius Steurer, the chef of the Alpe Mittelberg, is particularly skilled in this respect, which is why his mountain cheese was awarded top ranking a few years ago by the regional cheesemaking association, the Alpwirtschaftlichen Verein. It would be quite a shame to miss out on tasting this cheese in a hospitable and rustic setting in the heart of the snow-covered Allgäu Alps. In the winter months, they serve “Kässpatzen” (a cheese pasta dish) every Saturday, using their own homemade cheese. For groups of six or more people it may be necessary to reserve a table to be sure of enjoying this treat. The Alpe is open at weekends from the middle of October through to Easter. Guests are welcome every day between Christmas and Epiphany (6 January). It is also possible to stay overnight on the Sennalpe, which needs to be booked in advance. This gives you a unique chance to experience sunrise from the mountain the following day! The winter walk to Alpe Mittelberg in the Allgäu starts near the cemetery in Immenstadt and goes along the Steigbach stream as far as a wooden chapel. Then comes a fork in the path, where you need to keep left. The path continues past the Berggasthof Almagmach and on towards Alpe Mittelberg. On the return trip back into the valley it starts by heading towards the Seifenmoosalpe. Before reaching this mountain farm, you need to take the turning towards Immenstadt. The beautiful Allgäu winter scenery can be enjoyed all the way back to the car park.
