Reflective winter walks from abbey to abbey
The carefully planned “InSichGehen” walking trail in the Dachau region offers 14 places for reflection and relaxation.
Since 2012 in the Dachau region it has been possible to cycle, walk and marvel at churches, abbeys and pristine nature, and in addition to go on a reflective journey to seek inner peace. The meditative “InSichGehen” walking trail between the former Petersberg Abbey and Altomünster Abbey runs for around 9 km and offers walkers the opportunity to focus on themselves and their surroundings.
Sights along the way
The walk begins at the Petersberg Basilica, an impressive abbey from the Middle Ages, which still offers an unassuming, old-style Bavarian charm today. The end of the walk leads past the spectacular gardens of the Abbey Church of Sankt Alto and Sankt Birgitta in Altomünster. These gardens are always open to visitors. The Abbey church in Altomünster dates back to the 8th century and is still to this day one of the most beautiful Rococo buildings in Bavaria.
“InSichGehen” combines exercise and reflection
On the well signposted “InSichGehen” walking trail, there are a total of 14 stations to discover between the two abbeys – whether alone or with the whole family, there’s something for everyone here. The trail offers unusual sound and listening experiences as well as balancing and trust games for letting go and recharging your batteries. Among the highlights for young and old are a depiction of the solar system and a “living” sundial, incorporating the walkers themselves.
Since the walking trail consists only of paved paths and roads, it is easy to use all through the winter. Variety in the scenery is provided not just by churches and the carefully planned stations: In terms of landscape, the trail passes fields, winter woodlands and hills as well as tranquil villages and picturesque ponds, ensuring plenty of diversity to gladden any walker’s heart.
