The Oberpfälzer Wald is rich in diversity with its combination of lakes, low mountains and castles. It also offers wonderful views, such as those over the green roof of Europe. The seven stages of the Nurtschweg trail, each around 20 km, lead through extensive woodland and past striking viewpoints – such as the Holy Trinity Church in Kappl, the castle ruins of Schellenberg and the Hochfels natural monument. The route starts in Kappl, near Waldsassen. From here it goes through Mähring, Georgenberg and Stadlern/Weiding to Waldmünchen. The trail is named after a post office clerk from Weiden called Johann Baptist Nurtsch, born in 1872, who was a nature lover and local historian. He used yellow-red-yellow markings to make the ancient and hidden routes of traders and pilgrims accessible to all.
