Oberammergau, home of the 500 year-old handicraft of wood carving

The famous town of Oberammergau also shows how inextricably linked a handicraft is to the history of its town. In principle a stroll through the town famed the world over for its Passion Play is almost like walking through a museum. The colourful and attractive frescos know as "Lüftlmalereien" that adorn the facades of the houses relate the history of the 500 year-old handicraft of wood carving. On every street corner and in every alleyway are wood carving shops selling an amazing array of nativity scenes, angels, Madonnas, crosses and figures of the saints.

The Ammergau Alps is currently home to some 60 wood carvers. Oberammergau’s Pilatushaus has a show workshop where visitors can watch a new figure emerging from a block of wood (from 15th May to 17 th October). Anyone wanting to enjoy a more hands-on approach to wood carving can learn the basics by joining one of the five-day courses on offer.
