“Batallion halt! Shoulder arms!” orders the little sergeant major. Lined up in front of him is a troop of 50 third graders. They are wearing red and white uniforms from the Rococo period with black tricorn hats and white plaits. At the front is the chosen hero, the “Kleine Obrist”, or Young Colonel. He sits high up on a steed and recites a poem. The boys’ battalion is followed by the rank and file of the boys’ band, which accompanies this historic procession with festive music. Enemy Swedes, foot soldiers, citizens and dance groups – they all march along in fervent celebration of their beloved local festival: the Kinderzeche Dinkelsbühl.
