Deep below the bed of the Main valley lies the secret of Bad Staffelstein: from a depth of some 1,600 meters Bavaria’s warmest and most concentrated thermal brine begins its journey to the surface. Deep, deep down in the ground, salt from a tropical sea that covered the earth some 150 million years ago is concentrated into valuable brine.
Today the "ThermenMeer“ offers a fabulous 16 indoor and outdoor pools ranging in temperature from 28 to 36 °C as well as a spacious "SaunaLand“ centre with a range of different themed saunas and a comprehensive programme of therapies and wellness treatments. The ThermenMeer is a state accredited thermal spa (staatlich anerkannten Heilquellen-Kurbetriebes).
Inviting pathways through the nearby spa park are just right for a stroll. A visit to the salt works is particularly worthwhile: a fine natural saline mist caresses the respiratory system. On balmy summer evenings the lakeside stage is the scene of a range of concerts and open air film shows.
But that’s not all: Bad Staffelstein in Franconia also has an array of other attractions to offer. Thousands of years ago the summit of the Staffelberg was home to the Celtic town of “Menosgada”. The historic centre of Staffelberg today bears witness to the town’s rich heritage left as a legacy from centuries past. One of the oldest buildings is the parish church of St. Kilian in which, Adam Riese, one of the town’s most famous sons was baptised. Close by is the half-timbered town hall.
The valley that is known as the Obermain Garden of Eden (Gottesgarten am Obermain) is home to a number of famous buildings such as Banz Abbey, once a rich Benedictine abbey and today a popular conference centre. Directly opposite is the pilgrimage church dedicated to the fourteen holy helpers (“Vierzehnheiligen“) that is considered to be Balthasar Neumanns piece de resistance.
Bad Staffelstein is also well known for its wonderful tradition of hospitality: typical, rustic inns - a staggering eight of which have their own micro-breweries, family run guesthouses and comfortable 4-star hotels. Visitors are spoilt for choice. One thing they do all have in common is the wonderfully warm welcome that visitors receive wherever they choose to stay.
