Once born of the volcano's fire, today placid and quiet - on the plateau, in the unadulterated forests and on the open craters the Bavarian Rhön has retained a particularly unusual abundance of species. This natural diversity is wont to be referred to as the "Table silver of German reunification" and is now protected in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. Furthermore locals as well as visitors appreciate the tranquility which emanates from the gentle landscape of the Rhön.
The nights in the Rhön are silent too, as well as dark: In the almost completely natural countryside the stelliferous sky has an appearance seldom experienced elsewhere in Europe. Many constellations, the Perseids and even the aurora borealis can easily be observed here - alone or during a night walk in the Sternenpark Rhön (Rhön stellar park).
- At the heart of the biosphere reserve lies the Kreuzberg with its Franciscan monastery and the Bruder-Franz-Haus (Brother Francis House). Outside the view of the soothing landscape is one to be enjoyed. Inside hold communion with yourself in the meditation and relaxationroom. It is a unique place of encounter and experience. Here one can find the impressive exhibition "Franz von Assisi und Gottes Schöpfung" ("Francis of Assisi and God's Creation").
